Society for Psychiatric Update & Research is, in a way trying to mediate WHO's cause towards mental illness
Psychiatric disorders are quiet common in any society and most of them can be treated very effectively. They are neglected because of stigma, shame, unawareness about suffering of people and lack of treatment facilities. Mental illness represents four of ten leading causes of disability worldwide. 25% of world population suffers from behavioral problem or mental illness, some or the other time in life. In 2001 WHO had given a slogan on Mental Health Dispositions, ‘Don’t Exclude, Dare To Care’.
In 2002, Society for Psychiatric Update & Research (SPUR) was established with the aim to Educate, Research & Create Awareness about Psychiatry.
It is located in the premises of Shanti Nursing Home. The goal of SPUR is,
1. Education
2. Research
3. Awareness building
Allied objectives are taking training camps for medical and paramedical personnel, taking camps for de-addiction, setting up facility for rehabilitation of psychiatry patients, setting up laboratories, libraries, dispensaries etc. All of this is carried out with the aim to give treatment, reduce stigma and create awareness about mental illness among various strata of the society.
What is done to increase the Awareness?
